Ranger Saves Lives Of Two Visitors
Ranger Dan Abbe was flagged down by park visitors south of the tunnel on
Wawona Road while on his way to work in Yosemite Valley on Tuesday, May
26th. They told him that there was a truck over the side of the road and on
fire, and that there were people still inside. Abbe found a full-sized
pickup with an upright trailer behind it resting on its side about 30 feet
below the road. Fire burned in the engine compartment as he worked to
extricate the two occupants. He was finally able to get them out and
escorted them downhill and away from the truck and trailer. They told him
that the pickup was filled with 70 gallons of gas, that they had an extra
50-gallon gas container onboard, and that the trailer had two full propane
tanks. Abbe moved them further away from the vehicle, then returned to the
road. At the point, the passenger compartment filled with smoke, and
crackling noises issued from the pickup; with minutes, both track and
trailer were fully engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to the
vegetation around it. The fire was suppressed and Abbe and the visitors
were taken to the park medical clinic, where they were treated for smoke
inhalation and released. The truck and trailer were a total loss. The
visitors credited Abbe with saving their lives and will be coming back to
the park in the near future to present him with a plaque to show their
appreciation.

Yosemite Art Exhibit to Feature Diverse Works by Artists-in-Residence
A unique art exhibit is opening on June 20, 2009 at the Yosemite Museum
Gallery. The exhibit features work from seven professional artists, all
part of the Artists-in-Residence program. The program, established over 20
years ago, is coordinated by Yosemite Renaissance. Professional artists are
invited to live in Yosemite for one entire month which allows them to
immerse themselves in the park, visiting the spectacular expanse that is
Yosemite and capturing the hidden gems behind the traditional icons.
Art includes paintings, prints, drawings, fabric art and sculptures by John
Barnett, Jane Culp, Tom Killion, Bruce Klein, Hearne Pardee, Bonnie
Peterson and Gina Werfel.
An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Friday, June 19
at the Yosemite Museum Gallery. The reception is open to the public.
This diverse exhibit continues through November 8. If you are visiting
Yosemite we encourage you to stop by the Yosemite Museum Gallery to see
these national artists’ interpretations of the beauty that is Yosemite.
Yosemite Museum Gallery is located just west of the Visitor Center.
Yosemite Renaissance, a non-profit corporation, encourages diverse
interpretations of Yosemite and the environment of the Sierra Nevada. This
art exhibit helps bring together the works of serious contemporary artists
that do more than duplicate traditional representations. A continuum with
past generations of Yosemite artists is created through the reestablishment
of the interpretation of the visual arts. These visual arts are an
interpretive medium of the surrounding landscape and a stimulus to the
protection of the environment. -NPS-
Editors Note: For more information about specific art on display, please

June 19-20 (Friday-Saturday) A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS. A retired
Chinese scientist comes to the U.S. to spend time with his

societies: we are horizontal, they are vertical. An American spreads widely
into his own generation and times. Overseas, a person is more conscious of
his or her place on the family tree. The same often holds true of younger
and older generations everywhere. This poignant story of clashing cultures
and perceptions is thought provoking, moving, and insightful, from leading
Chinese-American director Wayne Wang.
