periodical created by park staff from 1922 until the 1980's. Today, it's
been reborn as a web video series, produced by park videographer Steven M.
Bumgardner. Episode 6: Maps has just been posted to the park website and
features interviews with such Yosemite institutions as Jan van Wagtendonk
and Pete Devine, and also includes new GIS Specialist Terressa Whitaker.

The General Services Administration will be conducting an internet auction
of Yosemite personal property consisting of one lot of tires and one lot of
tire chains and cross links. For further information regarding the sale
items or to register to bid, visit the website gsaauctions.gov. The sale is
number 91QSCI09173 #801-802. The auction opens on 06/22/2009, and closes
on 06/29/2009. These items are located in the yard adjacent to the
warehouse in El Portal for inspection, and are marked with yellow item
number cards. Park employees are allowed to participate in the sale, with
the exception of any employee with unfair (nonpublic) detailed knowledge or
prior use of an item offered for sale. Such employees are prohibited from
bidding on that item, and the prohibition includes their immediate family
as well. Employees must view the items and bid on their own time. (D.
Ramsey - 6/23/09)
A yellow-bellied marmot has been reported in the vicinity of the El Portal
Maintenance/Warehouse/Resources Management & Science complex. This species
does not naturally occur in El Portal, but is found in higher, cooler
regions, like Olmsted Point and Tuolumne Meadows. This marmot probably rode
down from a higher elevation on a piece of equipment (not driving it, but
riding somewhere in the undercarriage). The marmots in several places along
Tioga Road are known to have a thirst for antifreeze, and will sometimes
chew through engine hoses to get it. Wildlife Management will be trying to
trap the poor animal to return him/her to a more favorable climate, and
remove the threat of antifreeze abuse. In the meantime, if you park in the
area of the El Portal complex, please check for any pools of fluid under
the front of your engine before driving. The engine coolant flows from the
engine through the radiator and back through two thick hoses; one high and
one low. These are the usual sites of marmot damage. Fluid dripping from
the right rear of the engine is usually just condensation water from the
air conditioner of a recently-driven vehicle, which is perfectly normal.
Please report any El Portal marmot sightings or damage to Steve Thompson at
379-1437. (S. Thompson 06/24/09)
