Today Yosemite has cold temps and clouds with a 20% chance of precipitation with the snow level arond 5,000'. The best chance for new snow is Wednesday and after that it looks clear.

The photo of Yosemite today shows the moon rising over clouds in the afternoon as you look east into Yosemite Valley from Hwy 120.

Yosemite Daily Photo, clear skies, frost and warminmg temps

Yosemite today has perfect clear skies with the mornings being very cold, in the 20's. The days are starting to warm up a bit with most of the snow melted on the sunny side(North Side) of Yosemite Valley. On the shady side (South Side) where the sun never shines there is a nice frost build up that makes for some nice photos.

Look for a possible small storm coming in on Saturday night and then clear skies for most of next week.

Yosemite Daily Photo, A cold, snowy, windy Yosemite Valley.

There was a pretty good little storm that rolled through last night and the snow level dropped to about 3,500' with a couple of inches in Yosemite Valley. Today it cleared out and the strong north wind came in with snow banners on the Valley walls and Half Dome.

Todays photos are of the wind in Yosemite Valley starting out with the south wall and blowing snow followed by a wind swept Half Dome, taken at 4pm 12/21/09

Yosemite Daily Photo, Snow, Ski, Trees

Yosemite was blanketed in snow yesterday and today was clear and COLD! The low in Yosemite Valley was 14 degrees and 6 degrees at Badger Pass Ski Area.

It snowed down low, down to the 500' level and it remained so cold today that the snow in Yosemite Valley did not really melt at all.

Todays photos are of Yosemite Valley from Inspiration Point, snow covered trees in Yosemite Valley and Badger Pass. Badger Pass has 1' of snow and with more storms forecast is looking to open on 12/18.

Yosemite Daily Photo, El Capitan and batten down the hatches.....

The weather this fall has been nothing short of perfect with clear blue skies, no control burns!, and warm temperatures. It looks like this is all going to end as a series of storms is forecast to start in on Monday. Get ready for a light storm on Monday and then some heavier storms starting on Wednesday with the snow level down to 5,000'.

We do need lots of rain and snow as it has been a very dry fall and the Badger Pass Ski Area is to open on 12/18 if conditions permit. The Glacier and Tioga Pass Roads are closed for the winter. The Glacier Point road will open to Badger Pass on the 18th.

Yosemite Daily Photos, Waterfalls on the Foresta Road

A very nice hike this time of year is on the Foresta Road which drops down from the small town of Foresta on Hwy 120. You drive into Foresta about 3 miles to the end of the paved road and you can then hike on a old road down through forest, past a large meadow and to Foresta Falls about 1 mile down. Further down are more waterfalls and the 2nd photo shows a old gold mining area about 3 miles down.

If you were to follow this road down it ends up in El Portal on Hwy 140. This is also a great mountain bike ride up or down.

Yosemite Daily Photo, Snow!

Yesterdays short snow storm dumped several inches of fresh snow above 7,000 feet and a trace down to 5,000'.  Today was clear and the sun melted most of the snow down low but it was still hanging in the trees and on the cliffs up high.

The Tioga Pass and Glacier Point Roads are closed. If it stays nice they may reopen but with more storms forecast for later next week this could be it for the winter.

Today's photo is from Hwy 120 looking east towards Yosemite Valley and you can see the snow up high on the rim of the valley and on Sentinel Dome.
