Yosemite officials ponder future of Curry cabins

    YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif.—

For the past year-and-a-half, 233 cabins in Yosemite National Park have been off-limits to visitors because of rockfall dangers. Now National Park Service officials are trying to figure out what to do with the historic buildings of Curry Village before they succumb to the elements, vandals and nesting animals. The cabins have been frozen in time behind a chain-link fence since October 2008.

That's when the equivalent of 570 dump trucks of granite fell on 17 cabins where youngsters on a field trip had been staying. Park officials are asking the public for suggestions as they begin an environmental assessment. That could lead to some buildings being moved next year and other being demolished. The superintendent is accepting public comment through April 7.

We are getting more rain this morning with snow around 5,500'. Hwy 41 and 120 are R1

The Horestail Falls, Firefall event is happening right now and even though there is plenty of water from warm days and lots of snow the clouds have not been cooperating. There have been a couple of real good days where the falls was lit up red but the last 2 have been cut off by clouds.

The forecast is for a series of storms to move through so that looks like it for this year unless we have a magical clearing at sunset one day soon...

Here we have a close up of Horestail Falls from yesterday and meanwhile the view back east was not to bad.

I was up on Washington's Column yesterday doing a photo shoot when all of a sudden we heard this loud roaring noise which we thought was a low flying jet. We turned around and saw the largest avalanche off the summit of Half Dome that looked like a huge waterfall.

You can see the large area on the visor that released and then after the avalanche hit the base there was this slushy sound from the snow flowing down the gully.

  27. A speeding reminder, the rangers were out at 6am this morning giving tickets on Hwy 140

    TARGETED SPEEDING ENFORCEMENT
Over the next several months, rangers in the Valley and El Portal will be
conducting targeted speeding enforcement aimed at reducing speed-related
traffic issues on the roadways. Speeding vehicles are the greatest
threat to people and wildlife in the park. Moreover, this effort is in
response to requests from the community indicating a desire for increased
speed enforcement to better provide for the safety of pedestrians,
motorists, and wildlife. Citations will be issued where warranted.
Remember that the people who use these roads most often are your
neighbors, coworkers, and friends; help keep them safe by driving
defensively and in compliance with all posted speeds and regulations.

Targeted speed enforcement is a proven effective method for achieving
these goals. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the
National Park Service believes motorists can be deterred from speeding.
Additional area specific reminders are outlined below.
