YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK — Permits will be required to scale Half Dome in Yosemite National Park on weekends and holidays.

Park officials say so many people have been using the cable handrails to scale the granite monolith on peak days that it's posing safety concerns. Two hikers have fallen to their death while climbing Half Dome in recent years, and one suffered serious injuries on the cables during a crowded weekend last summer.

The park estimates that about 84,000 people climbed Half Dome in 2008, or an average of 840 per day during last year's busiest times.

Starting in May, hikers will need permits Friday through Sunday and holidays, and they can start requesting them in March. Permits are free, but each one costs $1.50 to process.

Park officials say the pilot program will be in place at least through 2011.

  13. Yosemite, Finlay's Run Helmet Cam

This is the ski run off El Portal View on the Glacier Point Road in Yosemite. It takes you down some good steep terrain and comes out on Hwy 41 below. You can see the Lower Merced River Canyon and El Portal way below, to bad the snow does not go all the way. So named after Finlay a famous Badger Pass Ski Instructor and also refereed to as "The Burn" as it goes through the burned out area seen from the road.

  14. This could be the BEST year for Horsetail Falls!

With the huge series of storms that just dumped tons of snow in Yosemite this is looking to be one of the best Horsetail Firefall events in Years. yosemite horestail fallsWe now have one of the 2 key ingredients needed for the Horesetail Firefall event and that is water, plenty of it. All that will be needed next is clear sunsets and it should be one heck of a show!

It is just 2 weeks away from the start of the window when this event will occur.

Horsetail Falls, El Capitan, Yosemite, aka El Capitan Falls, drops 1500 ft. off incredible El Capitan. It is best viewed from a picnic area along Northside Drive. Look way up to the top of the big rocks east side to see the waterfall. You’ll need at least a 200m zoom lens to get decent photo. Horsetail Falls also has low drainage and disappears by May or June. The best time of year to see Horsetail Falls is in February. If you are here on a clear night in February, be sure to visit this waterfall at sunset. The sun strikes the rock in such a way that it appears Horsetail Falls is on fire. This is a incredible sight to see. You have to have clear or clearing weather and water for all to come together.

  17. Badger Pass celebrating its 75th Anniversary Sunday, 1/25/10

The winter storms have delivered ten feet of fresh powder to Yosemite's Badger Pass Ski Area, prompting the resort to reschedule its 75th anniversary events to Sunday, January 24.

Ten feet of new snow is a mixed blessing. It's what every skier and boarder dreams of, but it also takes extra time for ski areas to clean up after five days of winter storms.

As a result, Yosemite's Badger Pass has rescheduled activities previously scheduled for Saturday, January 23. They will now take place on Sunday, January 24, 2010:

    Here's what's happening:

    * 9:00am - Period Costume (1930s ski outfit). Receive a free, full-day lift ticket if you wear an authentic, 1930s ski outfit to Badger Pass on Sunday.

    * 9:30am - Guided Cross Country Ski Tours down the Chinquapin Trail, used prior to the existence of Badger Pass in the early 1930s to access Old Badger Summit for downhill skiing

    * 10:00am, 1:30pm & 4:30pm - Historic Badger Pass film (three showings), accumulated over the decades.

  19. Yosemite is closed! 1/22/10

Yosemite is closed due to hazardous conditions(?) , a bunch of oak trees down.  Never seen this is the 35 years I have lived here, the old boys would clear the trees and keep things going.

It sounds like it may be awhile and hopefully they will have the park open tomorrow so we can enjoy the new snow and powder at Badger.

Yosemite National Park Announces Release of the Yosemite Environmental
Education Center Final Environmental Impact Statement

Yosemite National Park announces the availability of the Yosemite
Environmental Education Center Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS)
for public review. The Yosemite Institute (YI), a nonprofit partner
organization, has provided environmental education programs for children in
Yosemite National Park since 1971. YI provides multi-day experiential
programs in the park under a cooperative agreement.

The FEIS fulfills the environmental analysis and public review requirements
under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historic
Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106. In 2002, Yosemite National Park
conducted public scoping to solicit ideas and identify issues and concerns.
Public, tribal, and agency participation has continued to provide vital
contributions and feedback as this project has evolved. In May 2009, a
draft EIS was released for a 60-day public review period, and the park
    received 47 public comment letters.

Break out the Norwegian reindeer sweaters, woolen knickers and leather boots.

The Sierra's original ski resort, Yosemite's Badger Pass, commemorates its 75th anniversary Jan. 23-24 with special activities geared toward winter sports enthusiasts.

To top it off, DNC Parks & Resorts will offer a free lift ticket to anyone dressed in 1930s-era ski attire. Wooden skis are strictly optional.

"It'll be interesting to see how many people come up in period clothing," DNC spokesman Kenny Karst said. "Maybe there's a mad scramble right now on eBay."

Located 23 miles from Yosemite Valley, Badger Pass became the first ski resort west of the Mississippi River when the lodge was constructed in 1935. Before that, the main ski run went from Old Badger Summit to Chinquapin, where Glacier Point Road turns off from Wawona Road.
