  1. Yosemite Acting Superintendent Questioned On Big Meadow Fire

    August 31, 2009 02:25 pm
    Bill Johnson, MML News Director

Yosemite National Park, CA -- In an exclusive Monday interview Acting Superintendent Dave Uberuaga was questioned about the wisdom of ordering a prescribed burn this past Wednesday, a burn that has now charred 4,909 acres as of 8:30am today.

Uberuaga signed the order on the morning of Wednesday, August 26 to ignite what was to have been a 91 acre prescribed burn. That fire reportedly escaped within its initial hour.

Question: Why would you start a prescribed burn given the heat and the fact that California is now in the third year of a drought? ...

Answer: "The drought in California was something that was factored into the decision. At the elevations we're dealing with at Yosemite we have a lot of analysis that goes into anything that leads into a prescribed burn. Those are scientific. They look at everything from temperature and humidity, what is the drought conditions."

Question: Knowing what you now know, would you ignite the Big Meadow prescribed burn again? ...

The Big Meadow fire as viewed last Wednesday.

As of noon Monday, the Big Meadow fire within Yosemite National Park had consumed nearly 5,000 acres but was 55% contained and crews were making enough progress that some of the air tankers being used to help battle the blaze were sent to Southern California, where a far more volatile situation exists.

Big Oak Flat Road remains closed. Tioga Road will be open Tuesday but with limited access through Thursday. Many hiking trails and campsites remain closed. No structures have been lost.

Meanwhile, many are asking the question: How did this prescribed burn, which was supposed to involve only 91 acres, get away from a National Park Service team that routinely carries out controlled burns? (None of those 91 acres actually burned; that's how quickly this fire changed direction and got out of hand.)

An interagency review panel will address the issue in a week or two, park spokesman Scott Gediman said.

Gediman added that prescribed burns sometimes leap beyond designated boundaries but no one at the park could recall a runaway fire of this magnitude.

  5. The Tioga Road is being closed from Crane Flat to White Wolf due to smoke, 8.31.09 4pm

Concerning the Big Meadow fire:  The Tioga Road is being closed from Crane Flat to White Wolf due to smoke on the road imparing driver visibilty and therefore the safety of drivers and firefighters.    We will advise when road conditions improve.

The big mistake in Yosemite National Park just keeps getting bigger as fire danger is spreading all across the state.

For the fifth day in a row, crews are still trying to gain control of the Big Meadow Fire. The blaze started inside Yosemite Park on Wednesday after a prescribed burn grew out of control.

It has now charred more than 4,000 acres. "Our first priority is to put out the fire and the second priority is to get people back into their homes."

The fire is threatening 50 homes, and has forced hundreds of people to evacuate the area.Harvey Holland lives just outside El Portal.

He said if fire crews waited for cooler conditions, this fire could have been prevented. The National Park Service is investigating those claims."I'm real surprised that they decided to do a prescribed burn in august."

"It is hot and windy and dry in August, but to accomplish our objective on this burn which was hazardous fuel burn, we really didn't have any other time we could have done it."

The Big Meadow Fire is one of several fires burning throughout the state.

The residents of Foresta, a tiny community located just inside Yosemite’s western boundary, have seen their share of fire. In 1990, 45 structures were burned in the devastating A-Rock Fire.

Since then, residents have worked closely with park fire managers to reduce hazard fuels and prevent future loss through a variety of projects including prescribed fire, mastication, property clearing, and proactive community planning, including developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

The last 3 photos are very note worthy as it shows a small spot fire starting in front of hilltop right in front of me! The fire fighters jumped right on it.

All the fire you see behind galleries and hilltop was a back burn they did on friday with lots of support around.

  25. Frequently Asked Questions About the Big Meadow Fire

Yosemite National Park, 8/31/09 from NPS Frequently Asked Questions About the Big Meadow Fire

A community meeting was held in El Portal last evening with Yosemite National Park Acting Superintendent Dave Uberuaga and other Incident leaders. A number of important questions were asked by employees and residents. Following are four of the most frequently asked questions and answers:

Why did the National Park Service ignite the Big Meadow fire in August? The Big Meadow prescribed fire was initiated based upon a written and pre-determined “window” of very specific conditions (temperature, humidity, fuel type, wind speed, smoke dispersal, etc.). At the time of ignition all conditions were within this window. Prescribed fires may be done any month of the year depending upon the objectives of the burn.

Why couldn’t the meadow be burned in much cooler conditions? The Park uses prescribed fire to accomplish specific objectives. In the case of the Big Meadow fire, those objectives were meadow restoration and the maintenance of fire resistant vegetation for the Foresta Community. For vegetation to burn it must be sufficiently dry and flammable to maintain a fire. The prescription for the Big Meadow burn was based upon these objectives.

  27. Yosemite Foresta Fire update, 9:06 AM 8.28.09

The troops have arrived in El Portal. The fire trucks are rolling in and the sky cranes are hard at work. Still no real fire visible yet on the ridge above El Portal where the fire is coming from.

Our house is shaking every time one of the sky cranes comes over heading to the river.

The fire is also up in Crane Creek.

  28. Yosemite Foresta Fire update, 8.28.09 8:48 AM

The Big Meadow Fire has gone to #1 status. They are bringing in a Type 1 (I think that is what it is called) to manage the fire.

The helicopters are just now coming back in at 8:49 am

  29. Yosemite Foresta Fire update, El Portal is in danger, 8.28.09 8:10 AM

NPS has finally made the call to bring in structure protection for El Portal as they feel it is in danger from this fire. Inside sources say that NPS does not feel very confident that they can keep the fire from reaching El Portal.

I hope they bring in hundreds of trucks since it is their fire!

  30. Yosemite Foresta Fire update, El Portal in danger?? 8.28.09 7:45 AM

This morning  El Portal and western end of Yosemite is blanketed in a thick smoke. There is ash every where in El Portal and there is also a growing concern that the fire might move down into the Merced River Canyon and threaten this town. We all really hope that NPS has a plan to stop the fire from heading this way.

Here we have some photos from the NPS web cam on Turtle Back Dome from 7:30 am and I have drawn in points of reference. El Portal is on the other side of that hill engulfed in flames and down 2,000' into the canyon. It is not even 2 miles away!

It seems like the 1990 fire all over again.
