  2. Daily Report - Yosemite National Park Wednesday, Thunderstorms in Tuolumne, July 29, 2009

Yesterday saw some good scattered thunderstorms in the Tuolumne Meadows area with some good cracks of lightning. More are predicted today. They were very scattered and only dumped for several minutes and it was very refreshing.

Yosemite Valley should once again be hot so if you are looking for a escape from the heat head up on Hwy 120 to the Tuolumne Meadows, Tioga Pass area and enjoy some brief periods of afternoon rain.

Yosemite is well known for being one of the most wondrous places in the world with its beautiful vistas and gorgeous scenery. You will hear hundreds of different languages spoken daily when you visit Yosemite Valley as millions of tourists from all over the world wander the Park.

But many years before settlers entered Yosemite in 1851 what was the language spoken by the Native people of Yosemite Valley? What was the native language of Chief Tenaya and his original band of Yosemite Indians? Let's look at the first account by the doctor who had first contact and see.

In CHAPTER IV from "Discovery of the Yosemite, and the Indian War of 1851, which led to that event", by Dr. Lafayette Houghton Bunnell:

"Major Savage was our best authority. He could speak the dialects of most of the mountain tribes
in this part of California, but he confessed that he could not readily understand Ten-ie-ya, or the Indian guide, as they appeared to speak a Paiute jargon."

(07-25) 16:53 PDT -- With each step on the trail this weekend, Theresa Ho is making giant strides to overcome a nightmare trek at Yosemite National Park. She was crushed by a boulder and broke her back, several ribs and right fibula, punctured her right lung and sustained scrapes, tears and crush wounds.

    Tom Stienstra

"This is the first time I've camped in two years," Ho said before departing Thursday for the wilderness in Virginia Canyon in the high Sierra. "Being outside, sleeping outside, is an incredible experience that I'm so excited to be able to do it again."

Ho was hiking in Yosemite up LeConte Gully, a steep, rocky cut above the LeConte Memorial Building in Yosemite Valley. With her husband, Tom Lambert, they trekked off-trail and climbed some 900 feet in about 45 minutes.

"As I was trying to scramble up over a four-foot boulder above me, it came loose and started rolling toward me," Ho said. "I jumped backward and started sliding down the gully head first with the boulder rolling down after me. At one point, I kind of got my feet against the boulder to try and push it away. But it rolled right over the top of me. It got really dark. I remember thinking, 'Please, don't let the boulder stop now.' "

    Calling all water-loving filmmakers

By: Brent Begin 07/24/09 10:23 AM PDT

The workers over at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission really like their tap water. But the PUC is betting that people enjoy the fresh water stored in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and delivered every day throughout the Bay Area so much that they’ll produce a video that tops this low-budget example. The winner of the contest will receive a special tour for four people of the O'Shaughnessy Dam and the Hetch Hetchy watershed near Yosemite. And second place winners will receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the wastewater treatment plant for up to 10 people. Sounds like a party in need of some nose plugs. But the biggest prize may be that the winning video not only gets played over and over on The City’s Web site, but it will get a screening at next year’s Frozen Film Festival in San Francisco.

Help the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spread the word about enjoying and conserving our great Hetch Hetchy drinking water!

  12. Yosemite Unveils Energy Efficient Vehicles

Yosemite, CA - Yosemite officials say four new hybrid (electric-diesel) tractors will reduce emissions used for the Yosemite Valley Floor Tours by 85 percent and allow for 800 percent better fuel economy than the previous vehicles.

The new tractors, purchased by DNC Parks and Resorts at Yosemite, at a cost of $150,000 each, pull trailers for a two hour tour hosted by a National Park Ranger.

Acting Yosemite Park Superintendent Dan Uberauga says, "We are very proud of these new vehicles and take great pride in leading by example. Going green is incredibly important to the park."

Around 60 were on hand for a Thursday ribbon cutting. Approximately 70,000 people take the Yosemite Valley Floor Tour each year.

We had some thunderstorms roll through Yosemite's high country yesterday with the main impact over the southern portion down by Mt Clark. Tuolumne Meadows had scattered rain and the rain pushed out west all the way to Tenaya Lake. Very heavy rain fell in the Tioga Pass and Lee Vinning grade area. Last night we had some scattered rain in Tuolumne and today dawned partly cloudy.

It looks like we might get more thunderstorms in Yosemite today but where they will hit is very hard to predict.

This photo is from last nights sunset over Tuolumne Meadows and is looking east at the crest of the sierra with Tuolumne Meadows down low and Mt Gibbs, Mt Dana and Tioga Pass on the crest.

'The best sunset ever or your money back'

Like most men, I have five or six "lines" that I, all too often, insert into a conversation fully expecting to be lauded for my insightful wisdom and/or my witty humor. Of course, I expect this response each and every time I drop one no matter how many times a person might have heard it.

One of my favorites is to call Yosemite Valley the Jesus Christ of wild places; it gave its life so that other wild places might live (Oh, c'mon. It's kind of cute). Large crowds swarm Yosemite Valley easing the pressure on other mountain cathedrals.

So, the flip side of a crowded Yosemite Valley is the peace and quiet we can find nearly anywhere else. Venture just 100 yards from any Sierra roadside turnout and you will likely be alone. Last week, I wrote about a trip to the Yosemite high country. On the drive across Yosemite Park to Tuolumne Meadows, I decided to visit three lovely spots, close to the road, that few people ever see.

  18. Yosemite Art Exhibit to Feature Diverse Works by Artists-in-Residence

A unique art exhibit is opening on June 20, 2009 at the Yosemite Museum Gallery. The exhibit features work from seven professional artists, all part of the Artists-in-Residence program. The program, established over 20 years ago, is coordinated by Yosemite Renaissance. Professional artists are invited to live in Yosemite for one entire month which allows them to immerse themselves in the park, visiting the spectacular expanse that is Yosemite and capturing the hidden gems behind the traditional icons.

Art includes paintings, prints, drawings, fabric art and sculptures by John Barnett, Jane Culp, Tom Killion, Bruce Klein, Hearne Pardee, Bonnie Peterson and Gina Werfel.

An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Friday, June 19 at the Yosemite Museum Gallery. The reception is open to the public.

This diverse exhibit continues through November 8. If you are visiting Yosemite we encourage you to stop by the Yosemite Museum Gallery to see these national artists’ interpretations of the beauty that is Yosemite. Yosemite Museum Gallery is located just west of the Visitor Center.

  19. 1938 TWA airplane crash in Yosemite

Drama of 1938 TWA crash echoes anew as museum in KC reviews artifacts
    By MATT CAMPBELL
    The Kansas City Star

The passenger plane that went missing in California was front page news in Kansas City back in 1938 because it involved our own hometown airline.

The Transcontinental and Western Air flight from San Francisco to Burbank had run into a severe storm and turned back because of ice. Blown off course, the DC-2 with nine souls aboard smashed into a snowy mountain in Yosemite National Park, just a couple of hundred feet from the crest.

The wreckage would not be found and the bodies recovered for more than three months. It was big news at the time, but had long since been forgotten.

Until a California antique dealer recently stumbled upon a battered TWA first officer’s cap in a cedar chest in a garage sale.

He wanted the TWA pin with the Indian head on the cap. What he ended up buying was the dramatic story of a 23-year-old fruit packer and weekend gold prospector who, on a hunch, found the wreckage 71 years ago.

The dealer, Bob Hoskin of Redlands, Calif., traveled this week to Kansas City to show what he had to officials of the Airline History Museum here.

  20. Yosemite Climb for a Cause

Half Dome is a Yosemite icon and the ultimate day hike for adrenaline junkies in search of a challenge.

The 14-16 mile roundtrip trek is arduous, as it involves a gain of 4,800 feet in elevation and boasts a knee-knocking, hand-clamming cable ascent that tests one’s strength and courage. But, the rewards are impressive with dozens of spectacular waterfalls and bigger-than-life panoramic views of the Yosemite Valley and the High Sierras.

"I hear that the area at the top of the Dome is the size of three football fields," says Woodinville dentist, Dr. Dale Travis, "and that it’s a photographer’s dream."

Travis plans to make the climb over Labor Day weekend. He’ll be one of 13 dentists participating in Climb for a Cause’s annual challenge.

Climb for a Cause is a non-profit foundation that uses adventure travel to raise money for dental related projects around the world. The organization, which was founded in 1994 by Daniel Bobrow, helps bring dental care to children in need and works with such charitable operations as Himalayan Dental Relief, Operation Smile, the Guatemalan Dental Relief Project and Children’s Dental Care International.

  24. What’s happening to Yosemite’s big trees?

What’s happening to Yosemite’s big trees?
    By Judy Lowe | 07.21.09

The giant trees on the West Coast are awe-inspiring, but surprisingly, they haven’t really been studied much over the long term, notes Peter Bowes of BBC News. The reason?

Unlike studies with smaller plants and almost all animals, no individual scientist is able to track a forest giant for its entire lifespan - from germination to death. They live for hundreds of years and play a vital role in the ecosystem long after they have died.

To remedy that situation, James Lutz of the University of Washington and his team – with the help of volunteers – have set up an open-ended project to monitor a 62-acre plot in California’s Yosemite National Park that hasn’t burned in the past 70 years. First they’re going to measure and map the estimated 30,000 trees in the area. Then they plan to return each year to see if any trees have died and try to determine why.

This is in response to a study by Dr. Lutz [PDF] and others that determined that “between the mid-1930s and the 1990s, the density of large-diameter trees in Yosemite National Park declined 24 percent.”

Sip and swirl in scenic splendor this fall at the 28th annual Vintners’ Holidays. The popular event series brings together 32 prominent California wineries over a series of eight sessions. Participants meet, learn from and dine with different winemakers, winery owners and growers in each session, moderated by some of the most respected wine authorities in the country.

The fabled Ahwahnee hotel’s spectacular décor is the setting, built to echo the grand scale of the surrounding scenery. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame no less a spectacle than Glacier Point, Half Dome and Yosemite Falls.

There’s no more fitting place to sample the bounty of California vintners.

The 2009 schedule is as follows:

    Session I: November 1-3, 2009 (Sunday-Tuesday)
Moderator: Evan Goldstein, M.S., and president, Full Circle Wine Solutions, Inc.
    Rob McNeil, Mumm Napa Estates
    Tom Rinaldi, Provenance Vineyards
George Bursick, J Vineyards & Winery
    Ed Sbragia, Sbragia Family Vineyards

    Session II: November 4-5, 2009 (Wednesday-Thursday)

As it warms up, one can find expanses of blooming flowers at the higher elevations. The best flower shows are at around 6,000' in elevation with some flowers appearing at the 8,500' in places like Tuolumne Meadows.

    Yosemite Paiutes discover lost treasure

    From article at http://www.indiancountrytoday.com/yourict/50843492.html

With the internet at our finger tips we Yosemite - Mono Lake Paiutes discovered something amazing that would have gone unnoticed if left to Yosemite National Park Service and their official Indian ethnologist Craig D. Bates. Something that has historical significance to Yosemite, California and cinematic history, and also photographic significance. Something that we Paiutes believe would've been buried if the false history of Yosemite Miwoks would have continued.

Several of our people had collected photos for years of our ancient homeland Yosemite. We would look for them on sites like eBay and other places. One elder had a photo of one of our early leaders Captain John in a group in front of a cedar bark house in Yosemite with a white man painting them. The photo was taken by famous early cinematic pioneer and British photographer Eadweard Muybridge.
